Hong Kong Style Cola Chicken

Hong Kong-style cola chicken is a popular home-cooked sweet and savory chicken dish. Just as the name implies, the dish requires the use of Coca-Cola! Coca-cola provides carbonation that will tenderize the chicken as well as add sweetness to what would otherwise be a traditional soy sauce chicken dish. This is especially popular among children and adults who enjoy dishes that have a hint of sweetness balanced with a savory soy sauce flavor.

Ingredients

  • 8 Pieces 8 Chicken Legs and/or Thighs

  • 1 Tablespoon 1 Olive Oil

  • 1 Can 1 Coca-Cola

  • 4 Tablespoons 4 Soy Sauce

  • 2 Tablespoons 2 Dark Soy Sauce

Directions

  • On high heat, put oil in a ceramic pot that will fit the 8 pieces of chicken. Once the oil has had a chance to heat up, sear the chicken on all sides in the pot.
  • Add the can of Coca-cola, soy sauce, and dark soy sauce. Wait for liquid to boil. Let boil for 5 minutes and then turn heat down to medium-low to let chicken simmer and cover with lid for 30 minutes. Turn chicken halfway through until evenly cooked on all sides.
  • After 30 minutes, uncover pot and turn heat back to high to reduce the sauce further for another 10 minutes. If the internal temperature of the chicken is 180F degrees then it should be done.
  • Plate and serve with a pot of rice. Sauce can be reserved to be drizzled on chicken and rice.

Notes

  • You can also use wingettes and drummettes.
